Kelen is the daughter of Robin (Goldberg) and musician T. Michael Coleman (born Thomas Michael Coleman). Her brother is graphic designer Josh Coleman. They were raised in Potomac, Maryland.
Kelen has said that her father is Christian and her mother is Jewish.
Kelen’s paternal grandfather was James Thomas Coleman (the son of Joseph Raymond Coleman and Sadie Duggins). James was born in North Carolina.
