Tony was born in the Hawaiian Islands, to a Portuguese-born father, Antone Louis Fernandez, and to a Hawaiian-born mother, Mary Furtado Mendonca, who was of Portuguese descent, from the Azores. Minnie was born in California, to Portuguese parents.
