David Levy Yulee was an American politician and attorney. A member of the Democratic Party, he was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida Territory’s at-large district, from March 4, 1841 to March 3, 1845, and a U.S. Senator from Florida, from July 1, 1845 to March 3, 1851, and again, from March 4, 1855 to January 21, 1861.

David was born on Charlotte Amalie, the son of Hannah Margarite Ben Danan/Abendanone and Moses Elias Levy, who worked in the lumber business. His family was Sephardi Jewish. His father was born in Essaouira, Marrakesh-Tensift-Al Haouz, Morocco, and spent part of his life in Gibraltar. His mother was born on Sint Eustatius, a Dutch-owned Caribbean island. At the time, the British occupied his birth island, St. Thomas, now part of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

David’s family moved to the U.S. in the 1820s, and he was raised in Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida Territory.

David was said to be a second cousin, through his father, of politician and attorney Judah P. Benjamin.

David was married to Nancy Wickliffe, with whom he had four children. At the time, he added Yulee, a Sephardi family name, to his name. He converted to his wife’s Episcopalian religion when they married in 1846. Nancy was the daughter of politician Charles A. Wickliffe, who was Governor of Kentucky and U.S. Postmaster General, among other duties.

David’s paternal grandfather was named Elias Eliahou/Eliahu Ha-Levy/Ha-Levi/Levy ibn-Yuli (the son of Judah). Elias was born in Rabat, Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaer, Morocco, and was a courtier and royal merchant. The family served as advisers to the Sultans of Morocco.

David’s paternal grandmother was named Rachel. Rachel was from Tangiers.

David’s maternal grandfather was named David Ben Danan.

David’s maternal grandmother was named Rachel.
