Betty Friedan was an American feminist writer and activist. She is known for her 1963 book “The Feminine Mystique.”

Betty was the daughter of Miriam (Horwitz) and Harry Maurice Goldstein, who owned a jewelry store. Her father was born in Sums’ke, Kharkiv, Ukraine. Her mother was born in Illinois, to parents from Hungary. She had three children, including theoretical physicist Daniel Friedan, with her former husband, theatre producer Carl Friedan.

Betty’s paternal grandfather was named Julius Goldstein. Julius was born in Volyns’ka oblast, Ukraine.

Betty’s paternal grandmother was Nechama/Naomi Susak (the daughter of Itzhak Moshe Susak and Dobrish Kotik). Nechama was born in Volyns’ka oblast, Ukraine. Itzhak was the son of Binyamin Susak and Rivka, possibly Valdman.

Betty’s maternal grandfather was named Sandor Horwitz.

Betty’s maternal grandmother was named Bertha.
