Betty was the daughter of Miriam (Horwitz) and Harry Maurice Goldstein, who owned a jewelry store. Her father was born in Sums’ke, Kharkiv, Ukraine. Her mother was born in Illinois, to parents from Hungary. She had three children, including theoretical physicist Daniel Friedan, with her former husband, theatre producer Carl Friedan.
