Anton Walbrook was an Austrian-British actor. Particularly known for starring in the U.K.’s Gaslight (1940) and The Red Shoes (1948), his roles also included the films Martin Luther (1923), The Secret of Castle Elmshoh, Salto Mortale (1931), The Pride of Company Three, Three from the Unemployment Office, The Five Accursed Gentlemen, Melody of Love (1932), Waltz War, Victor and Victoria (1933), George and Georgette, The Switched Bride, Maskerade, A Woman Who Knows What She Wants, The English Marriage, Regine, The Gypsy Baron, I Was Jack Mortimer, The Student of Prague (1935), The Czar’s Courier, Michel Strogoff (1936), Tomfoolery, Port Arthur, The Soldier and the Lady, Victoria the Great, The Rat (1937), Sixty Glorious Years, Dangerous Moonlight, 49th Parallel, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, The Man from Morocco, The Queen of Spades (1949), La Ronde (1950), King for One Night, Vienna Waltzes, On Trial (1954), Oh… Rosalinda!!, Lola Montès, Saint Joan (1957), and I Accuse! (1958). He was initially billed as Adolf Wohlbrück.

Anton was the son of Gisela Rosa (Cohn) and Adolf Ferdinand Bernhard Hermann Wohlbrück. His father was said to have been descended from as many as ten generations of actors, and was himself a circus clown; who appeared with the Schumann circus. Anton studied in Deutsches Theater in Berlin during the 1910s. He became a popular actor in the 1930s, particularly in Germany and the German film industry. Because of the Nazi regime, he left for Hollywood, California, in 1936, and then moved to London, England, in 1937. He became a British citizen in 1947. Anton was a partner of English florist Eugene Edwards, until his death.

Anton’s maternal grandfather was named Wilhelm Kohn.

Anton’s maternal grandmother was named Antonia Lewien.
