Michel de Carvalho, credited as Michel Rey while acting, is a British actor/child actor, financier, private banker, and Olympic skier and luger. He starred in the film The Brave One (1956) as the Mexican boy, Leonardo. His roles also include the films The Divided Heart, The Tin Star, Flood Tide (1958), The Space Children, and Lawrence of Arabia (1962), as the servant Farraj; and the series Naked City. He was vice-chairman of investment banking at Citigroup, where he was the chair of Citi Private Bank in the EMEA.
Michel was born in Buckinghamshire, England, to German Jewish parents, Annie (Lisser) and Heinz Alfred Popper, a leather merchant, who was general manager of London and Provincial Leather Processes, Ltd. His father was born in Berlin. His paternal grandparents had moved to England as well. His mother was born in Hamburg. Michel’s maternal grandmother Else was killed at Auschwitz in August 1943. His maternal uncle, Dr. Kurt Isaac Lisser, was killed in Auschwitz in 1944, as were Kurt’s wife and daughter.
Michel is married to Dutch billionaire heiress Charlene Heineken, later Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken. Charlene’s father was businessperson Freddy Heineken, who was chairman of the board and CEO of Heineken International from 1971 to 1989; a company founded by Charlene’s legal great-grandfather Gerard Adriaan Heineken. Upon receiving her inheritance in 2002, Charlene became the wealthiest person with Dutch citizenship. The couple has five children.
