Ellen Weinberg-Hughes is an American professional ice hockey player, and coach. A defense, she played for the New Hampshire Wildcats of the University of New Hampshire; and was with the U.S. women’s national team. Her team competed at the 1992 Women’s World Championship, capturing a silver medal; Ellen was named to the tournament’s all-star. She also played collegiate lacrosse and soccer. She is a member the UNH Athletic Hall of Fame, and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
Ellen is the daughter of Lynne Penny (Klamon) and Warren Abraham Weinberg, who was a renowned mediatric neurologist, and faculty member and medical researcher at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Her brother is sociologist and academic administrator Adam S. Weinberg, who has been President of Denison University, since July 1, 2013.
Ellen is married to Jim Hughes, a hockey player and team captain, who was director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Their children, Quinn Hughes, Jack Hughes, and Luke Hughes, are all professional ice hockey players, in the NHL.

Ellen’s paternal grandfather was Nathan Weinberg (the son of Adolph Weinberg and Mollie/Molly Groskind). Nathan was born in Tennessee, or Arkansas, the son of Jewish emigrants from Poland/Russia. Mollie was the daughter of Isidore “Ike” Groskind and Bertha.
Ellen’s paternal grandmother was named Pauline Stein (the daughter of Abraham Stein and Freda/Frieda). Pauline was born in Indiana, to Austrian parents.
Ellen’s maternal grandfather was Jerome/Jerry Erwin Klaymon/Klayman/Klamon (the son of Leo/Layzar Mutkah Klaymon/Klayman/Klamon/Kilemnik and Dora Herman). Jerry was born in Missouri, the son of Russian Jewish parents, with roots in Rovno.
Ellen’s maternal grandmother was Burnise Mildred Gruskin (the daughter of Morris Carl Gruskin and Elenor/Eleanor “Nell” Rubenstein). Burnise was born in Poland, to a Russian Jewish father, and to a mother who was born in England, to Russian Jewish parents. Morris was the son of Abram Zelik Grushka and Beyla Malka Rubinshtein, who were from Kaunas, Lithuania.
