Lou Reed was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He was known as the guitarist and vocalist of the American rock band The Velvet Underground, as well as for his solo career. Lou was the son of Toby (Futterman) and Sidney Joseph Rabinowitz, and grew up in Freeport, New York.
Lou’s paternal grandparents were Mendel Rabinowitz (the son of Solomon Rabinowitz and Mollie Novack/Novick) and Fannie Weinberg (the daughter of Yierma Weinberg and Slova Beckman). Mendel and Fannie were both born in Russia.
Lou’s maternal grandparents were Louis Futterman and Rebecca. They were both born in the Russian Empire, in present day Poland.
