William V. Roth, Jr. was an American lawyer and politician. A Republican, he was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Delaware, from January 3, 1967 to December 31, 1970, and a U.S. Senator from Delaware, from January 1, 1971 to January 3, 2001. He sponsored the legislation creating the individual retirement plan Roth IRA.

William was the son of Clara (Nelson) and William Victor Roth. His father was born in New York, to a Hungarian Jewish father and a German Jewish mother. His mother was born in Minnesota, to Swedish parents.

William’s religion was Episcopalian.

William’s paternal grandparents were Ignatz Charles Roth (the son of Jacob Roth and Fannie Spitzer) and Lena Neiman/Neuman/Newman (the daughter of Solomon Neiman/Neuman/Newman and Theresa Reise).

William’s maternal grandparents were Charles/Charley A. Nelson (the son of Johanne Sonstad) and Anna/Annie Resin.
