Allan’s mother was a German Jewish refugee who escaped to Britain. His father is said to have been born in Helsinki, Finland, to a Finnish mother and a father from Russia or Ukraine, of Sephardi Jewish descent. His father’s family moved to Stockholm, Sweden, shortly after his father’s birth.
Allan grew up in England, and had a secular Jewish upbringing.
