Michael Mayer is an American theatre director, filmmaker, and playwright. He won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for Spring Awakening in 2007. Among his stage credits, he has also directed American Idiot, for which he co-wrote the book; and renditions of the operas Rigoletto, in 2012, Marnie, in 2017/2018, La traviata, in 2018, and Aida, in 2024. He directed the films A Home at the End of the World, Flicka, The Seagull (2018), and Single All the Way, and episodes of the shows Alpha House and Smash.
Michael is the son of Louise and Joseph Emanuel Mayer, a labour attorney. He is married to oncologist Roger Waltzman.
