Frederick Wiseman was an American filmmaker, documentarian, theatre director, and actor. Often exploring American institutions, he directed the documentaries Titicut Follies, High School (1968), Law and Order (1969), Hospital (1970), Welfare, Model, Missile (1988), Central Park (1990), Ballet, Public Housing, Belfast, Maine; Domestic Violence, State Legislature, La Danse, Boxing Gym, Crazy Horse (2011), National Gallery, In Jackson Heights, Ex Libris: The New York Public Library, Monrovia, Indiana; City Hall (2020), and Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros. Whenever there was a scripting credit on the aforementioned documentaries, he received it. He also directed and co-wrote the narrative film A Couple. He co-starred in the films Other People’s Children (2022) and Eephus.

Frederick was the son of Gertrude Leah (Kotzen) and Jacob Leo Wiseman. His father was a Russian Jewish immigrant. His mother was born in Massachusetts, to Russian Jewish parents. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He was married to Zipporah Batshaw, until her death, with whom he had two children.

Frederick’s maternal grandfather was named Louis Kotzen.

Frederick’s maternal grandmother was named Ida/Ada Ablovitz/Abelovitz/Abelowitz/Lebovitz.
