Ernest Gold was an Austrian-American composer. Among the films he scored are The Defiant Ones, The Young Philadelphians, On the Beach, Inherit the Wind, Exodus (1960), Judgment at Nuremberg, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World; Ship of Fools, and Tom Horn.
Ernest was the son of Elisabeth (Stransky), a singer, and Dr. Gustav Goldner, who played the violin. Ernest attended the Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. His family moved to the U.S. after Austria was occupied by the Nazis in 1938, settling in New York City, New York. While Ernest was sometimes reported as having a Jewish paternal grandfather, all of his grandparents were Jewish.
He was married to Jan Keller, until his death. He had three children, including multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and record producer Andrew Gold, with his former wife, American soprano and ghost singer Marni Nixon (born Margaret Nixon McEathron).
Ernest’s paternal grandfather was Moriz Goldner (the son of Josef Philip Pinchas Goldner and Nanette Anna Oppenheimer). Moriz was born in Vienna, Austria. Josef was born in Brody, Galizia, L’vivs’ka, Ukraine, the son of Marcus Goldner and Rebecca. Nanette was born in Vienna, the daughter of Karl Oppenheimer and Rosalia Bodansky.
Ernest’s paternal grandmother was Alice Jeiteles (the daughter of Jonas Simon Jeiteles and Hermina Smetan). Alice was born in Szeged, Szegedi, Csongrad, Hungary. Jonas was the son of Moses Wolf Jeiteles and Paulina/Pauline. Hermina was the daughter of Philipp Hermann Smetan/Szmetan and Rosalia/Roza Regina Rebekka Auslander.
Ernest’s maternal grandfather was Dr. Siegmund Stransky (the son of Moritz Marcus Stransky and Mathilde Schönauer). Dr. Siegmund was born in Brno, South Moravia, Czech Republic. Moritz was born in Habry, Vysocina, Czech Republic, the son of Heinrich Stransky and Charlotte Schulhof. Mathilde was born in Újezd, Pilsen, Czech Republic.
Ernest’s maternal grandmother was Anna Spitzer (the daughter of Heinrich Spitzer and Therese Sprung). Anna was born in Rudolfsheim, Vienna, Austria. Heinrich was born in Budapest, Hungary, the son of Mayer Spitzer and Nanette Gross. Therese was born in Timișoara/Temesvár, Timis, Romania, the daughter of Anton Sprung and Therese Slazka.
